PERMANENT RESIDENT CARD RENEWAL

WHAT IS A PERMANENT RESIDENT CARD?

A permanent resident card is the primary method permanent residents (formerly landed immigrants) can prove their status in Canada. It is the only document that allows permanent residents to return to Canada by air. A permanent resident card must be renewed every five years.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT RENEWING A PERMANENT RESIDENT CARD

All permanent resident card holders, who are not Canadian citizens must renew their permanent resident card.  To do so, they must be able to prove that they have been residing in Canada for a minimum of 730 days in the past five years (from the day of the application) in order to receive an extension of their permanent resident card.

There are however, some exceptions, such as working for a Canadian company abroad, or residing with a Canadian spouse abroad.
